Ralph welcomes back ocean conservationist David Helvarg, who talks about offshore oil drilling and June 9th’s March for the Ocean and Steven Shafarman, author of Basic Income Imperative: For Peace, Justice, Liberty and Personal Dignity.
David Helvarg is executive director of Blue Frontier, an ocean conservation and policy group. He is the author of six books, including The Golden Shore — California’s Love Affair with the Sea. He also chairs the steering committee for March for the Ocean, which will take place on June 9th, 2018 in Washington DC and around the world.
“We know what the solutions are. We need to create the political constituency that can turn things around. And as you’re always emphasizing, Ralph, when people take their family to the beach, it’s not like they get in the water and go ‘I don’t mind if it’s polluted, because that at least means there’s less regulation.’”

Steven Shafarman is a co-founder of Basic Income Action, a non-profit organization whose mission is to win a basic income for all by educating and organizing people for action. He is the author of four books about basic income, including his latest Basic Income Imperative: For Peace, Justice, Liberty and Personal Dignity.
“Over the last few months I’ve had conversations with a number of members of Congress and they’re supporting this idea. Keith Ellison, the deputy chair of the Democratic Party has declared his support. A number of others, mostly progressive Democrats have said it’s at least an idea we should study seriously. Barack Obama even says it’s an idea we ought to be discussing.”
