Re-Targeting Iran/Political Satire

Ralph welcomes Alternative Radio’s, David Barsamian, who presents the perspectives of leading scholars of the Middle East on the ongoing turbulent relationship between the U.S. and Iran in the book “Re-Targeting Iran.” And political cartoonist, Dwayne Booth, AKA “Mr. Fish” joins us for a provocative discussion about the state of political satire. Plus, Ralph answers listener questions!

David Barsamian is a tireless and wide-ranging investigative journalist. He has altered the independent media landscape with his weekly radio program, Alternative Radio. Mr. Barsamian lectures on world affairs, imperialism, capitalism, propaganda, the media and global rebellions. He is the author of numerous books featuring voices such as Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad and Howard Zinn. Some of his more recent books are Global Discontents: Rising Threats to DemocracyCulture and ResistanceConversations with Edward W. Said and Retargeting Iran.

“Iran is a theocratic regime. Its policies are homophobic. Patriarchal. It doesn’t have a lot of really positive aspects to it, so it becomes a very convenient punching bag for Washington to ratchet up tensions in the Middle East, in order to justify the continuation of its imperial trajectory of massive military bases all over the region.”

Mr. Fish, aka Dwayne Booth, is a cartoonist and freelance writer whose work can be seen regularly at Harpers.org and Scheerpost. He publishes both under his own name and the pen name of Mr. Fish. In addition to numerous essays, interviews and critiques, he has written two novels, 9,8,7 and The Prick and several volumes of political cartoons.

“Power is systemic. And we have to not just attack personalities and think that we’re doing a good job. It’s very important to attack the basic cruel arithmetic that determines how power victimizes the common citizen.”

Mr. Fish, political cartoonist

“We grow up in elementary school and high school learning how to be powerless. Learning how not to challenge. How not to dissent. As a result, we’re not told that we’ve got this tool called Congress. And we’ve got this tool called the people’s votes. And we’ve got this tool called ‘most people want the same things in life.’”

  1. Don Harris says:

If any plane the president is on becomes Air Force One, when Trump is in Walter Reed Hospital does it become Walter Kant-Read Hospital?

  2. You need some audio treatment — Ralph’s voice comes through quite harsh.

  3. Don Harris says:

Do song parodies count as political satire?

  4. K.. Bednarel says:

Stand up-speak out against US taxpayer supported endless war, death, destruction and misery around the planet.
The real threat is climate change-defund the military-invest in Green New Deal and others actions to save the
planet! We are complicit and way way to unquestioningly complacent.

  5. I wanted to listen to Alternative Radio but the cost of $200 per year is unaffordable for me to subscribe. It is too bad there is no private funding available to make this podcast open to the public and free. Very much enjoyed this podcast.
