The report is quite informative in many ways in discussing how the tax code allows the wealthy to use philanthropy as a tax sheltering method and how this ‘philanthropy’ is used to buy political influence. However, there are many fundamental flaws with the report which is completely related to Bill Mitchell’s aforementioned critique of the open letter to the G20. One of the central arguments of the report, as mentioned on pages 9, 39, 48, and elsewhere, is that philanthropy is subsidized by taxpayers as a whole.
That notion is complete nonsense and shows a complete lack of understanding of how the US federal budget operates. The US federal government is not funded by taxpayer returns (revenue if we must used flawed terminology). The report is working on the false assumption that the federal budget is constrained by the amount government receives in taxes. While that might be true with state and local governments, it is absolutely not true with a fiat currency-issuing entity such as the US federal government.
Only when we understand that can we understand one of the fundamental problem with philanthropy which is not addressed in the report. Many charitable organizations which seem to have good intentions are doing work which should be done through public organizations via federal spending and this does not require ‘taxpayer funding’. Many charitable organizations are simply acting as privatized bodies doing work which should be done by government.
There is no reason why any private food bank should exist because the government can ensure that poverty does not exist. There is no reason why any organization should be raising money for medical research when the government can fund such research. There is no reason why any charity should be paying for medical work or running hospitals when government can and should provide comprehensive healthcare for all. There are no reasons why philanthropists need to meddle in public education.
We have a rather backwards culture as it pertains to charity. The public votes for austerity governments and then tries to recover imagined social credit by then providing conditional charity as a bandage for the wounds caused by austerity. People talk about how good they feel volunteering at a food bank, for example. Religious types talk about the salvation that comes from such work. What kind of backward, sick culture requires the voluntary creation of poverty for people to feel good about themselves? This anti-social behavior is completely nonsensical and completely avoidable with an understanding of economics.
Now, there are plenty of reason on the tax side of things for reform, but we must be cognizant of economic theory in creating good policy. Taxation is still vitally important because, as Bill Mitchell mentions, it reduces the influence the wealthy has on politics. Taxation gives the currency value and acts as an anti-inflationary tool.
If the Patriotic Millionaires are legitimate in seeing the implementation of progressive policy, they must take Bill Mitchell’s message seriously because it is impossible to take any organization seriously which does not understand elementary macroeconomics.

“Life was beautiful,” photojournalist Mahmoud Nasser told us on Monday’s livestream.
Mahmoud, who has Canadian citizenship, left Gaza with his pregnant wife and his family earlier this month. But, he said, he believed living in Gaza was “a calling – I had to go there, I wanted to go there. I wanted to capture my country … according to the way that I saw things.”
“Everything about Gaza is amazing,” he explained. “But I don’t know if I can say the same about it now because it seems like everything has changed. The things that I loved when I was there, I don’t think they are there anymore.”

Mahmoud described the agonizing decisions he and his family had to make while under constant threat of Israeli bombing, especially as residents of Beit Hanoun in the north of the Gaza Strip.
“In 2014, we lost our [generational] home in Beit Hanoun due to the war,” he said, referring to the Israeli attacks that summer. “But when this war broke out, I wasn’t in Beit Hanoun – my father was there, I was with my wife in Gaza [City].
When the current attacks started, Mahmoud said, he and his brother ultimately decided to bring their father to Gaza City.
“Now, thinking about what transpired days later, it was a great decision because Beit Hanoun was the first place to evacuate. It got hit really hard. And had we gone there, [we] don’t know what would have happened,” he said.
We discuss Mahmoud’s journalism work, his recent photo essays published by The Electronic Intifada, and what it was like being among thousands of internally displaced people sheltering in Khan Younis refugee camp before he left Gaza.
We also talked about his dreams for his unborn child, and why he said he would go back to Gaza “in a heartbeat” to raise his family there.
We were also joined by Chris Gunness, who served as the spokesperson for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestine refugees, for more than a decade.
Chris became a familiar figure to television viewers during Israel’s 2014 attack on Gaza. Throughout his tenure, he was under constant assault from anti-Palestinian lobby groups.
He talked to us about the dire humanitarian situation for the 2.3 million Palestinians under Israeli bombardment for the last six weeks, while lacking basic food, water and medical supplies.
For many children who have lived through serial Israeli attacks, Chris explained, “this is the fifth or sixth time they’re being re-traumatized.”
“The other horrifying thing that’s going on now is that there are many children who are waking up from whatever has happened to them to discover that they’re the sole surviving member of their family,” he said.
“Or that there are two of them, and their brother who’s perhaps a bit older than them, or sister, is now permanently disabled.”
Chris also described the “existential crisis” for UNRWA and its employees.
“As far as UNRWA is concerned, they’re all deep in crisis. They’ve lost 108 colleagues, and I’m sure that as with all death tolls, it’s far higher. There are many UNRWA colleagues lying underneath rubble.”

Israel's Communications Minister Threatens Haaretz, Suggests Penalizing Its Gaza War Coverage
After Likud Minister Shlomo Karhi proposed financial penalties against Haaretz for what he termed 'lying, defeatist propaganda,' prominent journalists slam the Netanyahu government's latest attack on the free press in Israel
Israel's Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi submitted a proposal to take action against Haaretz by ending the publication of government notices in Haaretz. Karhi, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, said the newspaper was "sabotaging Israel in wartime" and was an "inflammatory mouthpiece for Israel’s enemies."
The proposal, which was submitted without being vetted by the ministry's legal adviser, would immediately halt any payments to Haaretz from any state entity within his purview.
Haaretz publisher Amos Schocken responded to Karhi’s proposal by saying, “If the government wants to close Haaretz, that’s the time to read Haaretz.”
Karhi's proposal, which would forbid the publication of official government notices in Haaretz, and would cancel all state employee Haaretz subscriptions – including those held by members of the IDF, the police, the prison service, government ministries and government companies – was sent to Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs.
In a letter to Fuchs entitled, “Taking action against the Haaretz newspaper for the dissemination of lying, defeatist propaganda,” Karhi wrote: “Since the beginning of the war, I have received many complaints that Haaretz has taken an offensive line which undermines the war's goals and disparages the military effort and its social fortitude. It is possible that some of the paper's publications even cross the criminal standard set in those far-flung sections of the penal code reserved for wartime only.”
Prominent journalists from around the world have denounced Karhi's threats. CNN's Jake Tapper tweeted: "A push to undermine the free press from the Netanyahu government." The Nation's Jeet Heer wrote: "Haaretz is a great newspaper, needed now more than ever." Yashar Ali, who writes for the Huffington Post and the New York Magazine, wrote in response: "I just subscribed."

This data has been incredibly difficult to pin down.
This is what I've been able to get from my research:
Around 1,200 killed, down from around 1,400
I looked but couldn't find the official site for the Israels government's report on casualties. Their overall number is quoted by every major MSM media outlet, but not with any precision and never with a breakdown. That's typical of the MSM.
You'd think it would be easy to trace that data elsewhere, that the major news networks would publish this in detail, but noooooooooo! That would be the professional thing to do.
Anyway, all media report that the latest figure is around 1,200 killed, but no one except for one source gives the exact figure.
The most precise figure I've seen is 1,222.
Now, what is the most surprising to me is the breakdown. Those breakdown numbers float around depending on the source (and I use only dependable sources), but they are all in the same ballpark.
My best sources so far in this endeavor have been the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, FactCheck.org and the WSWS (World Socialist Website) which has always published correct data and provides their sources.
As I've shown above, this is what I get:
That last stat is super-surprising to me because the impression I got was that hundreds of children were butchered. However, that is simply not the case. Period. Facts are facts.
Also, I have been seeing more and more evidence that the Israeli Army used their Hannibal Directive and killed hundreds of their own civilians and soldiers in order to kill hard to get Hamas fighters.
The Hannibal Director refers to a 1986 order given to the Israeli Army to go ahead and shoot their own civilians and even soldiers in order to prevent hostage situations. It's named after the famous General Hannibal who took his own life rather than surrender to the Romans. It was used by the Israelis on at least one occasion whereby they killed their own soldier rather than let him be abducted. The order was rescinded in 2016, but the evidence so far strongly points to its use on October 7th.
I'm working on the friendly fire deaths and when I have compiled and correlated all my research I'll give you the deep dive data which none of the major US news agencies want to touch. I wonder why...
As of 10 November, 4,506 Palestinian children were killed and about 1,500 have been reported missing and may be trapped or dead under the rubble, awaiting rescue or recovery, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Gaza.
The number of children killed so far has exceeded annual figures in all war zones since 2019, according to Save the Children.
At least 33 Israeli children were killed on 7 October, and, according to the Israeli military spokesperson, 40 children are held hostage in Gaza.
At least 29 children have been identified by international authorities as having died in the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas.
As we said, the U.N. has reported that at least 29 of the roughly 1,200 people who were killed in Israel were children.
Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, maintains an ongoing list of officially confirmed casualties that includes 29 children.
On October 20, Ha’aretz released the names and locations of 683 Israelis killed during the Palestinian insurgency, or about half of the reported 1,400 death toll.
Of these, 331 were soldiers and police officers, many of them female, along with a further 13 rescue service members. (This number has since risen to 377 military and police personnel and 845 civilians, for a downwardly revised total of 1,222. The initial total included some of the dead Palestinians.)
None of those listed were children under the age of three, repudiating all of the lurid and mendacious claims about the slaughter, beheading, and, in one instance, cooking in an oven of babies.
Seven victims were reported as being between 4 and 7 years old, and nine between 10 and 17.

Former Israeli PM Ehud Barak says Israel built bunkers underneath Shifa hospital
When he says this, CNN's Christiane Amanpour is so blown away by that statement that she asks him, "When you say it was built by Israeli engineers, did you misspeak?"
And he answers, "No, it was many decades ago that we helped them build these bunkers!"
So, another example of this extreme right-wing and racist Israeli government lying by telling the truth.
Did they tell us this all the time they were bombing the hospital?

So basically, they were blowing up the hospital for a mistake THAT THEY MADE but didn't want anyone to know about and then went through the charade of "searching" for the bunker with dramatic footage of a ladder and tunnel!
These liars need to be arrested by the International Criminal Court, put on trial and sent to prison for the rest of their lives.

Ok, so he's calling for the end of Israel as a country. Why is Israel the only state that they want end? Do you imagine that the Jews living as a minority in a Democratic Country named Palestine wouldn't be butchered like they were on 10/7. Radical Islam wants everyone to follow the Koran or they are an Infidel to be killed.
This is pure revenge. What we're seeing is vengeance of a military force and a state that have been humiliated. He's calling Israel's response to the horror show of 10/7 as brutality itself. Israel went to war after that attack, since they can never let Hamas do it again. And Hamas has pledged to do it over and over again. In waging war, Israel is trying to avoid civilian casualties, while Hamas is trying to increase them, so they can win the PR war. Storing rockets in Mosques, Hospitals, Schools, Kids bedrooms, etc - puts the civilians at risk.
Palestinians deserve nothing less than the lifting of the siege, release of all prisoners, and the dismantling of the apartheid state. Nothing less than that should be demanded. And all we're seeing people talk about is ceasefires, as though a ceasefire is some great accomplishment. Ceasefire does not provide the possibility of a future where this is not repeated. What needs to be demanded now is a political solution that will ensure the safety and security of Palestinians—and that is never part of the conversation. A ceasefire does not secure the lives or the security of Palestinians, because we know Israel will violate it a week later.

The report is quite informative in many ways in discussing how the tax code allows the wealthy to use philanthropy as a tax sheltering method and how this ‘philanthropy’ is used to buy political influence. However, there are many fundamental flaws with the report which is completely related to Bill Mitchell’s aforementioned critique of the open letter to the G20. One of the central arguments of the report, as mentioned on pages 9, 39, 48, and elsewhere, is that philanthropy is subsidized by taxpayers as a whole.
That notion is complete nonsense and shows a complete lack of understanding of how the US federal budget operates. The US federal government is not funded by taxpayer returns (revenue if we must used flawed terminology). The report is working on the false assumption that the federal budget is constrained by the amount government receives in taxes. While that might be true with state and local governments, it is absolutely not true with a fiat currency-issuing entity such as the US federal government.
Only when we understand that can we understand one of the fundamental problem with philanthropy which is not addressed in the report. Many charitable organizations which seem to have good intentions are doing work which should be done through public organizations via federal spending and this does not require ‘taxpayer funding’. Many charitable organizations are simply acting as privatized bodies doing work which should be done by government.
There is no reason why any private food bank should exist because the government can ensure that poverty does not exist. There is no reason why any organization should be raising money for medical research when the government can fund such research. There is no reason why any charity should be paying for medical work or running hospitals when government can and should provide comprehensive healthcare for all. There are no reasons why philanthropists need to meddle in public education.
We have a rather backwards culture as it pertains to charity. The public votes for austerity governments and then tries to recover imagined social credit by then providing conditional charity as a bandage for the wounds caused by austerity. People talk about how good they feel volunteering at a food bank, for example. Religious types talk about the salvation that comes from such work. What kind of backward, sick culture requires the voluntary creation of poverty for people to feel good about themselves? This anti-social behavior is completely nonsensical and completely avoidable with an understanding of economics.
Now, there are plenty of reason on the tax side of things for reform, but we must be cognizant of economic theory in creating good policy. Taxation is still vitally important because, as Bill Mitchell mentions, it reduces the influence the wealthy has on politics. Taxation gives the currency value and acts as an anti-inflationary tool.
If the Patriotic Millionaires are legitimate in seeing the implementation of progressive policy, they must take Bill Mitchell’s message seriously because it is impossible to take any organization seriously which does not understand elementary macroeconomics.

Mahmoud described the agonizing decisions he and his family had to make while under constant threat of Israeli bombing, especially as residents of Beit Hanoun in the north of the Gaza Strip.
“In 2014, we lost our [generational] home in Beit Hanoun due to the war,” he said, referring to the Israeli attacks that summer. “But when this war broke out, I wasn’t in Beit Hanoun – my father was there, I was with my wife in Gaza [City].
When the current attacks started, Mahmoud said, he and his brother ultimately decided to bring their father to Gaza City.
“Now, thinking about what transpired days later, it was a great decision because Beit Hanoun was the first place to evacuate. It got hit really hard. And had we gone there, [we] don’t know what would have happened,” he said.
We discuss Mahmoud’s journalism work, his recent photo essays published by The Electronic Intifada, and what it was like being among thousands of internally displaced people sheltering in Khan Younis refugee camp before he left Gaza.
We also talked about his dreams for his unborn child, and why he said he would go back to Gaza “in a heartbeat” to raise his family there.
We were also joined by Chris Gunness, who served as the spokesperson for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestine refugees, for more than a decade.
Chris became a familiar figure to television viewers during Israel’s 2014 attack on Gaza. Throughout his tenure, he was under constant assault from anti-Palestinian lobby groups.
He talked to us about the dire humanitarian situation for the 2.3 million Palestinians under Israeli bombardment for the last six weeks, while lacking basic food, water and medical supplies.
For many children who have lived through serial Israeli attacks, Chris explained, “this is the fifth or sixth time they’re being re-traumatized.”
“The other horrifying thing that’s going on now is that there are many children who are waking up from whatever has happened to them to discover that they’re the sole surviving member of their family,” he said.
“Or that there are two of them, and their brother who’s perhaps a bit older than them, or sister, is now permanently disabled.”
Chris also described the “existential crisis” for UNRWA and its employees.
“As far as UNRWA is concerned, they’re all deep in crisis. They’ve lost 108 colleagues, and I’m sure that as with all death tolls, it’s far higher. There are many UNRWA colleagues lying underneath rubble.”

Israel's Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi submitted a proposal to take action against Haaretz by ending the publication of government notices in Haaretz. Karhi, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, said the newspaper was "sabotaging Israel in wartime" and was an "inflammatory mouthpiece for Israel’s enemies."
The proposal, which was submitted without being vetted by the ministry's legal adviser, would immediately halt any payments to Haaretz from any state entity within his purview.
Haaretz publisher Amos Schocken responded to Karhi’s proposal by saying, “If the government wants to close Haaretz, that’s the time to read Haaretz.”
Karhi's proposal, which would forbid the publication of official government notices in Haaretz, and would cancel all state employee Haaretz subscriptions – including those held by members of the IDF, the police, the prison service, government ministries and government companies – was sent to Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs.
In a letter to Fuchs entitled, “Taking action against the Haaretz newspaper for the dissemination of lying, defeatist propaganda,” Karhi wrote: “Since the beginning of the war, I have received many complaints that Haaretz has taken an offensive line which undermines the war's goals and disparages the military effort and its social fortitude. It is possible that some of the paper's publications even cross the criminal standard set in those far-flung sections of the penal code reserved for wartime only.”
Prominent journalists from around the world have denounced Karhi's threats. CNN's Jake Tapper tweeted: "A push to undermine the free press from the Netanyahu government." The Nation's Jeet Heer wrote: "Haaretz is a great newspaper, needed now more than ever." Yashar Ali, who writes for the Huffington Post and the New York Magazine, wrote in response: "I just subscribed."

This is what I've been able to get from my research:

I looked but couldn't find the official site for the Israels government's report on casualties. Their overall number is quoted by every major MSM media outlet, but not with any precision and never with a breakdown. That's typical of the MSM.
You'd think it would be easy to trace that data elsewhere, that the major news networks would publish this in detail, but noooooooooo! That would be the professional thing to do.
Anyway, all media report that the latest figure is around 1,200 killed, but no one except for one source gives the exact figure.
The most precise figure I've seen is 1,222.
Now, what is the most surprising to me is the breakdown. Those breakdown numbers float around depending on the source (and I use only dependable sources), but they are all in the same ballpark.
My best sources so far in this endeavor have been the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, FactCheck.org and the WSWS (World Socialist Website) which has always published correct data and provides their sources.
As I've shown above, this is what I get:
That last stat is super-surprising to me because the impression I got was that hundreds of children were butchered. However, that is simply not the case. Period. Facts are facts.
Also, I have been seeing more and more evidence that the Israeli Army used their Hannibal Directive and killed hundreds of their own civilians and soldiers in order to kill hard to get Hamas fighters.
The Hannibal Director refers to a 1986 order given to the Israeli Army to go ahead and shoot their own civilians and even soldiers in order to prevent hostage situations. It's named after the famous General Hannibal who took his own life rather than surrender to the Romans. It was used by the Israelis on at least one occasion whereby they killed their own soldier rather than let him be abducted. The order was rescinded in 2016, but the evidence so far strongly points to its use on October 7th.

Ok, so he's calling for the end of Israel as a country. Why is Israel the only state that they want end? Do you imagine that the Jews living as a minority in a Democratic Country named Palestine wouldn't be butchered like they were on 10/7. Radical Islam wants everyone to follow the Koran or they are an Infidel to be killed.
This is pure revenge. What we're seeing is vengeance of a military force and a state that have been humiliated. And just like any bully, any gangster who's been humiliated, they take it out on the weakest people they can find, people who cannot defend themselves… It's revenge for the sake of revenge. My take:
He's calling Israel's response to the horror show of 10/7 as brutality itself. Israel went to war after that attack, since they can never let Hamas do it again. And Hamas has pledged to do it over and over again. In waging war, Israel is trying to avoid civilian casualties, while Hamas is trying to increase them, so they can win the PR war. Storing rockets in Mosques, Hospitals, Schools, Kids bedrooms, etc - puts the civilians at risk.
Palestinians deserve nothing less than the lifting of the siege, release of all prisoners, and the dismantling of the apartheid state. Nothing less than that should be demanded. And all we're seeing people talk about is ceasefires, as though a ceasefire is some great accomplishment. Ceasefire does not provide the possibility of a future where this is not repeated. What needs to be demanded now is a political solution that will ensure the safety and security of Palestinians—and that is never part of the conversation. A ceasefire does not secure the lives or the security of Palestinians, because we know Israel will violate it a week later.

According to Time, Reporters Without Borders has filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court for war crimes committed against Palestinian journalists in Gaza. The complaint cites the "deliberate, total or partial, destruction of the premises of more than 50 media outlets in Gaza." This crisis will likely prove decisive for the legitimacy of the ICC, as several countries including South Africa, have alleged that the court is biased in favor of western-aligned governments.
